My name is Joe Esposito. I was Elvis Presley’s road manager, right-hand man, and close personal friend from the time we were discharged from the Army in 1960 until August 16, 1977, when I tried to bring him back to life as he lay on the floor of his bathroom in Graceland. That was the worst day of my life. For seventeen years, I had organized Elvis’s personal life. I handled almost every detail surrounding his personal needs during the movie years, the Vegas years, and the touring years. I even made flight and hotel arrangements for all of Elvis’s girlfriends, which would be a challenge to anyone’s organizational skills, because Elvis never saw one woman at a time, even during his marriage to Priscilla. Three or four was the average figure. One might be in the air on her way in, crossing flight paths with another on her way out. A third woman would be with Elvis in his hotel suite, with perhaps a fourth on hold in a room a few floors below.
I was Elvis’s road manager, but many people misunderstand the job description and think I claim to have been Elvis’s personal manager. No. There was only one personal manager for Elvis. And that was Colonel Tom Parker. Since Elvis’s death, the truth about the Colonel’s relationship with Elvis has been obscured by a rumor mill that works overtime, manufacturing salable lies to this day.
My years with Elvis were wonderful, exciting times, but the words don’t do justice to the experience that I want to share. I wanted to create this site to tell the truth about life with Elvis —- both positive and negative —- about the Colonel, about my job, about Elvis’s relationships with celebrities and ordinary people. You’ll learn about Elvis’s complex relationships with his buddies, known as the “Memphis Mafia,” and his many girlfriends, the most gorgeous and understanding women any man could ever hope to know.
Nothing in my ordinary background could have prepared me for a life with Elvis. I was the picture of an ordinary, happy-go-lucky twenty-year old on March 12, 1958, when the United States Army called me into service. Two weeks later, on March 24, Elvis Presley was inducted.
